Preparation instructions
The instructions below are general. You will receive personalised instructions when scheduling your examination — always follow those.
Preparing for a gastroscopy
A gastroscopy examines the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum. Correct fasting is essential.
- 1Fast (no food) for at least 6 hours before the examination.
- 2Avoid liquids for at least 2 hours before the examination.
- 3Tell us about any medication you take, especially anticoagulants or diabetic medication.
- 4If you receive sedation, arrange for someone to accompany you.
Preparing for a colonoscopy
For a reliable colonoscopy, the bowel must be clean. You will be given a prescription for a special cleansing solution.
- 1Follow a low-residue diet in the days before the examination, as advised.
- 2Take the bowel-cleansing solution according to the instructions you are given.
- 3Fast from solid food for the period indicated before the examination.
- 4Tell us about any medication you take and arrange for someone to accompany you.
